His sermons were not only informative and helpful for spiritual growth, but also captivating, filled with personal and interesting illustrations. Brother Darrell was particularly known for his passion for soul-winning. He not only led thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, but also taught others to share Jesus and become soul-winners themselves. He traveled around the world, teaching pastors to lead their churches to become soul-winning churches. Brother Darrell’s global evangelism strategies took him to countries such as England, Scotland, Italy, Romania, Albania, Portugal, Angola, South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, India, South Korea, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Peru, Guyana, and Brazil.
Brother Darrell’s educational journey included Coahoma High School with further studies at Baylor University (B.A. 1958), Southwestern Theological Seminary (M.A. 1963), and Luther Rice Seminary (D.Min. 1983). In 1999, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Houston Baptist University and an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Global Korean Seminary.
Throughout his career, Brother Darrell held various positions in different churches and organizations. He served as the President of Total Church Life Ministries, Inc. and Vice-President of Evangelism at the Home Mission Board. His church ministry began as a student and bi-vocational pastor in West Texas at Forsan Baptist Church, Bethel Baptist Church, King Baptist Church, and Lakeview Baptist Church. He was senior pastor at Dauphin Way Baptist Church Mobile, AL, First Baptist Church Pasadena, TX, First Baptist Church Vernon, TX, First Baptist Church Liberal, KS, Hillcrest Baptist Church Amarillo, TX, Berea Baptist Church Big Spring, TX, and Midway Baptist Church Big Spring, TX. In his later years, Brother Darrell and Kathy were active members at Memorial Baptist Church in Houston, TX.
Brother Darrell was an accomplished author, having written several books translated into other languages. His books will continue to teach, challenge, and share the Good News to future generations and includes My All For Him (autobiography), Synergistic Evangelism, Incredibly Gifted, People Sharing Jesus, Doctrine of Salvation, What’s Next, and, of course, Total Church Life.
The greatest contribution to Brother Darrell’s life would be that you would join Him in heaven one day by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and then living your life here as soul winners as you Exalt the Savior, Equip the Saints, Evangelize the Sinner.
